Social Justice & Action Committee
The Social Action Committee believes it is important to “Think Globally, and Act Locally”. We join with nonprofit groups or other spiritual communities in Yamhill County that are already established in different areas of service, but we are also open to needs not already being met here. We are currently committed to monthly volunteering at YCAP and helping with the SMART reading program and teaching citizenship classes.. We try to keep our Fellowship informed about these opportunities to get involved locally.
The committee meets the second Sunday of the month. At the January meeting the members focused on expanding our knowledge about what and how we could help in the immigration issue. We decided to watch a documentary, Harvest of Empire, recommended by our Committee Chair. The film is about immigration history. Kathleen M. reported on an upcoming project in the community called Rapid Response on Immigration in Yamhill County and a meeting she had with an Americorp volunteer trying to establish better relations between Habitat for Humanity and churches in the area. Sal reported on the General Assembly’s upcoming 2-year project to study all the UU principles.
